There are two great clans of humans among us. One is definitely my clan; that is of the lawyers. No one can match the greatness of our clan. You know we are not poor as you think. We have Mahatma Gandhi and Abraham Lincoln with us.
But the other great clan is of the Doctors. They, the doctors, are really great people, all men and women whith white clothes, and mostly with specs of golden frame. If there were no doctors how could have we known the whereabouts of our curable and non-curable diseases?
There are people who regard the doctors as God. But to my mind there is one stupid difference between the God and the doctors. The God has never believed that he is a doctor. (Sorry I don't know exactly that whether God is He or she. But we found doctors in both the sexes.)
Sometimes these godmen, the doctors, too, are caught in a cage. One of my friends had a little difficulty for two days and had gone to a doctor.
He complained that ," Doctor, I find difficulty in passing urin. Can you help me?"
"Do you drink Wine?"
"Yes, doctor."
"Stop it. You will find no difficulty. It would be easy to pass the urin."
"Doctor, in that case it would not be easy for me to pass a pub."
(Important reminder: my friend, this one, does not live in Jaipur.)
It is not the only difficulty with the doctors that their handwritings are almost chaotic. It's very hard to understand what they tell the patients, too. Once a family doctor said to my friend that, "Look Mr. Shah, at this moment I can not say exactly what is your problem. It is due to drinking of wine, perhaps."
"OK, doctor, I would come again when you are not drunk."
We, the lawyers, too, find it hard to work with doctor. The other day one of my collegues was asking a doctor standing in a witness box.
"Doctor Mehta, did you say that the dead person was shot on the chest."
"No I said that the bullet had made inrods in his body through the space between the second and third rib in left side."
Another striking thing about the doctors is the billing pattern. In the case of the billing the doctors are pitiess than any other professionals. Even we, the advocates, get ashamed after seeing their bills. Once I had got some injury in my left leg. I had missed some steps of our staircase. (I would not say what was the reason to miss the steps. You know, it's our internal matter, between me and my wife).
But any way I have to contact a doctor. Though ashamed a little bit, my wife also was with me.
"Doctor, would he be able to wak on his feet?" My wife was really worrying now for just a gentle push she had applied on me out of her anger.
"Yes, he will. Don't worry."
And the doctor proved himself right.
I am now on my feet. I have to sell my car to pay the doctor's bill.
(One statutory Confession: I am not going to take any legal action if any of the Doctor-friends of mine on Sulekha slaps me mildly or heavily for writing this blog - Naval Langa)
I have come into contact with number of doctors who have dedicated their life for the service of poor people. They serve at in trust hospitals and serve without taking any fees. The Hospitals run by Satya Sai Trust is the best examples to see the devoted doctors working.
Thanks NL for being a shade in this dessert of criticism we docs face esp on our bills while we all know that hardly a small percentage of the total hospital bill is the docs fees! You know in a city hospital my hard working cardiac surgeon used to get 7500 rs per bypass surgery out of the 1 lac package which a ''trust'' hospital offerred!! Exploiting doics on all fronts is very common and they are kept as shiled for any mishap too.The wonderful thing is more are your efforts eg-asa surgeon who tries super human job of cutting out and repairing organs rather than just write medicines are the most sufferring community !! They are always blamed for the mishap and if they succeed THE GOD WHOM NOBODY HAS SEEN this unseen force gets the credit !! most of the times..we do not mind that too as we are happy that we have succeed yet another thousandth time to cut out a deadly disease or done something fruitful for the patient which no other even docs would have done.!!
For the doctors I would say that if any group of men and women have the best opportunity to serve the mankind, that is the group of doctors. And most of them are doing best they can do to keep the humans healthy.
please do noit be bitter about doctors.as in all professions there are some black sheep but here docs get blackened maligned very easily.Do not forget that he just recommends and you can get second opinion any time and leave him for good any time you may question him for the tests to be done .About kick backs and other things all the laws of the land while dealing with doctors are COMMERCIAL even admission is now so or based on CASTES reservations. So the society is going to rap what it has sown. The deals within doctors are within their own income and they might be splitting it or what what we should look is whether inspite of such tremendous market forces and finacial burden of all high tech service that a doctor or his team has to provide with hanging sword of social and consumer laws over his her head ARE THEY doing the patients GOOD !!?? YES they are .older docs did not have so much know how and patient care set up Today we all are lucky to survive many deadly diseases ..many do not and many suffer even finacially ..but blame the malady NOT THOSE WHO WANT TO CURE YOU OF THEM..most of the docs are real good and professional only FOR THEIR OWN REPUTATION and even market value so most cannot bebalmed .HERE a single bad event gets magnified by us all and the media .as the burning HOT torch of all human goodness has to be acrried ONLY by doctors and Teachers type of profession--despite so much commercial forces kept against medical industry we do not have single window in any of the aspects of a hospital adminstration to be benefitted from the society laws..at all.

If we can purchase, I mean maintain, good health, it is cheap at any cost. Like any other services, the health services are also becoming costlier.
Dear Naval Langa,
It is surprising that you still enjoy a good health despite your frequent encounters with the white coats ! From the doctor who writes the prescription with out touching your body and before you finish relating him the symptoms of your sufferings, to the one who recommends an ultra scan and many other tests that the latest bio-medical instruments are capable of revealing for a fortune that only a millionaire can afford, the legion is many. The kick backs in the trade of modern medical disgnostics and prescription of patented drugs of favourite companies, for a successful practitioner would be complementary to the one he earns out of a patient's consulting fees. The noble profession once the call of learned and devoted members of society has gone to the extent of even benefitting, by coming to the aid of criminals of the likes of Abdul Kareem Telgi of stamp paper fame, by devious route. Not that the other competing professions that were once considered divine and noble have lagged behind ! But the doctor in our villages and towns who once we Salammed and Namasthayed irrespective of age, and invited to preside on all public occasions with great reverence, had become a commodity extinct. From the Engineer who approves a road bridge constructed with lower specification to the Lawyer who chases the ambulance for their increased comforts in life, the community as a whole is infested with parasites that, to-day you have to find out your own illness and know some thing of the type of medication that is available before you go to a doctor. The exceptions are many but you have to be on guard before you choose to contact any professional. God bless us all from any serious ailment, and if it comes after 70, it is better that you fight it out and kick the bucket than make your relatives and off-springs run from pillar to post. The Doctors require a good treatment to restore their health to pristine glory .
read my blog on doc patient relationship three days back..medicine is a high tech high cost branch nowadyas and ''good'' doctors too believe their way of practice is over as patients want THAT type of doctors who impress and give better rooms etc. not easy diagnosis.another aspect is the balme of the misfortune of a event -a goal goes to the goal keeper who stives hard to prevent the goal-death an d disease..other 10 are never blamed..
