MAHATMA GANDHI TALKING WITH PEASANTS courtesy web
"First they ignore you,
then they laugh at you, then they fight you, then you win." - Mahatma Gandhi
Here Gandhiji had displayed how simple-minded he was. He just spoke in the language that could be understood even by a layman.
Whenever anyone asked him about the fate of new ideas, the unacceptable thoughts, he would answer in simple words. It is the rule of human mind that any new idea or revolutionary thought would be ignored first. No one would heed it.
If after ignoring, too, a person presenting the new thoughts is not discouraged, the people would start laughing at him or her thinking that the redicule would discourage the person to go forward on the way.
Even if the person crosses the line of laughing at him or her, the mass would turn active against him or her. They could go up to using the violence, too.
And finally the thought or the idea has its merit of its own, the same people would acept the same and start following it.
This is the simple logic of a lay man. Gandhiji had put it in nutshell.
